MI Approach

Math Illuminated (MI) is a highly individualized, structured and results-oriented program that takes into account the learning style of each student. We meet all students where there are skills wise and help them progress and succeed in mathematics.

MI’s approach to teaching mathematics is based on the time-tested traditions of systematic math education. We believe that success in mathematics is a function of deep understanding, consistent adequate practice, good work habits, and creativity. We also believe that ALL students can succeed in mathematics and our mission is to empower them with knowledge and confidence for such success. This is achieved by:

  • Focusing on providing  specific knowledge of mathematical concepts, formulas and definitions at a scope and depth level not available through the school curriculum
  • Concentrating  on the early development of abstract and critical thinking skills
  • Ensuring that each course and each tutoring session at MI is built to develop problem solving, critical thinking  and research skills, as well as work habits and creativity
  • Introducing all concepts through carefully selected examples
  • Providing  instruction that guarantees the mastery of each concept, and is always followed by supervised problem-solving practice with immediate and detailed feedback
  • Organizing and sequencing all topics in logical progression and pacing delivery to meet the needs of each student. The proper sequencing allows devoting more time to the in-depth learning of each topic and, therefore, eliminates the need for re-teaching the same concept
  • Using previously learned skills in new material – as students review, master, and build upon previously learned concepts
  • Emphasizing the development of organizational skills, test-taking skills and work habits
